Foto Focus Friday: Edit IN, not Out

happy friday everyone!

i’m so excited to announce a new blog series that we are going to be doing every Friday, called Foto Focus Friday.  i don’t know about you guys, but by the time the end of the week rolls around i’m pretty pooped =)  i start to even get lazy about reading some of the blogs i regularly follow.  so, the purpose of Foto Focus Friday is to give you a QUICK tip related to photography!

Prospect_Park_Family
this can be anything in regards to pre-shoot, shoot, or post-shoot.  and it may be business or camera related.  some tips may be things i’ve picked up on my own or stuff i’ve learned from others.  regardless, i hope they help you without taking too much of your time =)  since one of the goals is to keep this brief, here we go…

Foto Focus Friday – Tip #1 – Edit IN, not out!

i recently read a blog post by Stewart Randall , a photographer in the UK, about speedy workflows.  one of the sections that really struck me was a section on editing.  Stewart talked about how he would return from a wedding weekend with an upwards of 3,000 photos!  out of those 3,000 he would only be delivering about 500 to the couple.  in the past, he would “edit out”, meaning he would go through all of the images and decide which ones he DIDN’T want to use.  when he realized that the images he wasn’t going to use far outnumbered the chosen ones, he knew he was going about this all wrong.  so he began to “edit in.”  i’ve tried this on my last 2 photo shoots, and it saves so much time!  i used to make a 1st pass in Lightroom and get rid of any photos that definitely weren’t usable…people’s eyes were closed, they were out of focus (not in a good way!), etc.  then, i would go through a 2nd time and star/flag images i did want to use.  now, when i go through my photos, i immediately star my favorites and go from there.  i highly recommend this for those of you looking to save some time with editing!  which i think it’s safe to assume is most of you =)

comments and feedback are always welcome!  thanks so much for stopping by!
