Redlands Photo Exercise A-Z

it was the first Sunday in a long time where we didn’t have a shoot, or any other plans for that matter.  we’d watched enough Dexter for one week, and neither of us were in the mood for our usual outing of going to a movie or restaurant.

“we should just go out and shoot for fun,” Stephen said.  to me, all of the shoots are fun, but i did like the idea of a pressure-free shoot.  Stephen started looking up photo exercises online while i got ready.  within a few minutes he found it.  it was an exercise in which we go on a photo walk and have to take pictures of things that either look like the letters of the alphabet or resemble words that start with each letter of the alphabet (an arch for the letter “a” for example).

so we got our gear and headed to Redlands.  we chose three locations we wanted to go to and spend 30 minutes at each location.  me, being the competitive person i am, decided i wanted us to split up.  there were no rules, except for the aforementioned exercise guidelines and the fact that we had to meet back at the car after each 30 minute interval.

i had so much fun!  i enjoyed the quiet and just being with my camera for a couple of hours.  i enjoyed looking for things that i had never seen in a place i had been to so many times.  i enjoyed people looking at me strangely as i was taking a picture of the top of a trash can (it looked like the letter “D”!)

the best part was coming home and sharing our photos.  this exercise really showed me how differently Stephen and i think and perceive things.  first of all, almost all of my photos were things that physically looked like the letter.  except at the end where i got desperate because i couldn’t find my “s” and asked Stephen if he would be my “s” =)

whereas, almost all of his photos were things that resembled words that started with each letter.  on top of that, some of the images he had for specific letters really threw me off.  “how is that ‘M’?” i asked, looking at a photo of a car down an alley way.  “it’s ‘motion'” he replied.  as i looked more closely, i could see that the car was, in fact, moving.  i can’t help but wonder if he’s really creative or just full of crap =)  i think it’s the former, but i like to tease him as if it’s the latter!

i decided to arrange each of our photos into a collage.  here are the final results. i’m sure you can figure out whose is whose =)
