I’m going to disagree here, Jess. So any camera at any time will do? This can be unacceptable, since it is a variable dependent upon the quality demanded by the photographer. Early in my career I learned instantly that the master photographers Ansel Adams and Brett Weston always had a very high quality camera with them at all times. As a young man, before the advent of digital photography, I always had my 4×5 view camera, 2 lenses, and 25 sheets of film in my camera case chained and locked inside my truck. Later, it was my Rollieflex SL66, 5 rolls of film and two lenses chained and locked under a seat of my car. I always had one of my quality cameras with me at all times.

Today, it’s only much, much, much easier with the advent of digital photography. I have with me at all times a 12MP DSLR camera, whether at work, surfing at the beach, or, as this morning, shopping for breakfast items. Since the quality of zoom lenses have improved substantially over the years, one lens suffices – the 18-200mm. While I understand, thoroughly, the wonder of even the magic of capturing human vision, I also, personally, have stringent quality standards that I can’t live without, as it is the quality of focus control with fine detail that attracts me to photography, just to name two. My Droid has a 5MP camera, which is not much less than my first DSLR of 6.2MP. Why not use it? Well, for starters the lens quality, let alone focus control and parallax. But, if I have my Droid with me, why can’t I have one of my Nikons? Actually, I have a Nikon with me at all times, but not often my cell phone.

Novelty in photography is nothing new. I remember the time when all the rave was the Polariod SX70 camera. Ansel Adams even had some SX70 artist speak at a Yosemite workshop that I attended. Also, I have a landscape at Joshua Tree N.P. taken with a cardboard box camera using tin foil with a pinhole as a lens and the negative made from silver halide solution on paper. And, as with Mr. Chase’s iPhone pics, I appreciate novelty in photography too, as it always drives me immediately back to the quality that I demand.

If I had to do photography with a phone camera, I’d stay home and play my guitar!

thanks for sharing, Steve =) hope you’re doing well!
